My FiOS is bigger than your FiOS.

We got Verizon FiOS in our apartment yesterday. We called 2 weeks ago and were scheduled to get it installed on Monday. Then our appointment got delayed another 4 days because of a labor strike (Technician’s union vs. Verizon). But today, after 8 hours of watching a Verizon technician go in and out of our apartment, and up and down the elevator, we finally got it installed. We got FiOS. That’s fiber optics, the future of cable television and internet. The new standard. …Supposedly.

How revolutionary is Verizon FiOS supposed to be? Here are some benefits according to Verizon:

TV:
- FiOS TV Extreme HD - more HD channels than cable in NY
- Amazingly brilliant picture, Hyper-real color and flawless sound
- Up to 100 HD channels available with purchase of optional packages.
- Better picture than cable or satellite
- Instant On Demand access to order blockbuster movies, kids shows, sports programs and more

Internet:
- America’s Fastest High Speed Internet. FiOS speeds range from 10Mbps to 50Mbps
- Rated #1 for speed, reliability and customer service
- Stream videos and download films at lightning speeds
- Easily work from home – send and receive huge files in second

That all sounds great, but all the cable providers say stuff like that. They always claim they’re the best. After observing the Verizon technician slave over our installation all day, FiOS better be the best thing ever - for his sake. I’d like to think that Verizon is offering a premium product and that is why it took so long. Every other time I’ve gotten cable it’s seemed like the guy just walked in and flipped a switch. He was done in an hour, max.

Then again, this could be another case of poorly planned brand extension. (The technician did tell us this was his first time installing the cable portion on his own. He called for help just about every 45 minutes. Where’s the employee training?!)  We either have The New Standard in cable television and Internet, or we’ve got the XFL of telecommunications on our hands.

is to as is to ?

Let’s hope not…

That would mean:

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that we’re connected…developments to follow.
